Golden Swamp Wallaby

Golden morph of the Swamp Wallaby

Our newest secret!

Kudos to Sono for capturing and sharing such a great photo of this very shy wallaby.

They are seen most commonly in the Highlands, but have been spotted throughout the village.

A few locals are aware of the small mob of golden swamp wallabies in and around Currumbin. Here's a story I found on the Australia Zoo website and another from a Wildcare Australia facebook post.

Speaking with some of our Simpson Road neighbours during a recent platypus survey, several of them confirmed that a small mob of Goldies live and frequent the Simpson road area. Plus, sadly, a few Goldie road kills have been seen along Tally Connection road over the past few years.

However, it's not yet common knowledge that these beauties are this far south in Queensland.

The Queensland Museum notes the following about the golden morph Swamp Wallaby"

"Isolation on Stradbroke Island has favoured the establishment of a golden colour phase which is particularly frequent on South Stradbroke and now sporadically recorded from the northern Gold Coast to the Nerang State Forest."
